Direct attach cable is a communication equipment connection cable. It is commonly used to realize short distance high-speed interconnected communication. Active or passive

DAC cable can be divided into active and passive. The real difference between them is that the active DAC cable has a drive chip, while passive DAC cable is not. The passive DAC cable can transmit optical signal without electric energy drive. The optical fiber transceiver assembly of active DAC cable is equipped with electrical components, increase the transmission distance. Therefore, the transmission distance of the active DAC cable is far more than the passive DAC cable, but its price is also more expensive.


AWG
AWG means American wire gauge, is a standard of identifying the cable diameter, the common AWG values of DAC cable are 24AWG, 28AWG, and 30AWG. 24AWG is thicker and heavier than 30AWG. The longer the length is, 30AWG is more convenient than 24AWG, and the bending radius is limited. Therefore, in long distance transmission, it is suitable to choose 30AWG.

Cable length
The maximum transmission distance of the passive DAC cable is 5m, while active DAC cable can reach 15m. Therefore, if the distance between the network devices is less than 5 m, choosing the passive DAC cable is the most cost saving solution. If between 5M-15M, the user should choose the active one to ensure the normal transmission of the optical signal.

Select the suitable connector type
The application of DAC cables with different connectors is different. Generally speaking, SFP+ DAC cable is used for 10G connection, QSFP+ DAC cable is used for 40G connection, SFP28 DAC cable is used for 25G connection, QSFP28 DAC cable is used for 100G connection. In addition, the QSFP+ to 4*SFP+ DAC cable is usually applied to the connection between 10G and 40G network devices.
