Introduction about 40G QSFP+ SR4 BIDI modules

1. What is 40G QSFP+ SR4 BIDI ?
40G QSFP+ SR4 BIDI is different from the other 40G QSFP+ modules:
Other 40G QSFP+ modules (such as QSFP+ SR4 / LR4) use 8 channels to realize 40G transmission, But the 40G QSFP+ SR4 BIDI just use 2pcs 20G channel to reach this function, every channel can transmit and receive the signal from one multimode cable,
But also need notice that 40G QSFP+ SR4 BIDI must be used by pairs.


2. How does it work?
To realize the 40G QSFP+ SR4 BIDI transmit the signal, need three steps:
Step1: Combining four electrical signal to 2pcs 20G electrical signals;
Step2: Exchange 2pcs 20G electrical signal to two different wavelength 20G optical signal;
Step3: Transmit the different wavelength 20G optical signal to one optical cable, and then the 40G devices will receive the optical signal and works:


3. How to use ?
The common wavelength of the 40G QSFP+ SR4 BIDI are 850nm and 900nm, It can transmit stably in the multi-mode cable.
Also it is usually used with OM3/OM4 patch cords to transmit 100/150m.

It will become very easy when using the 40G QSFP+ SR4 BIDI in the data center, and it is unnecessary to change the former 10G network system,
So it is a very common and easily solution to save cost for the networks upgrading.
