Comprehensive knowledge of long-distance optical modules

  • August 15. 2023

Optical modules are the most common optoelectronic converter components. In optical communication networks, transmission capacity is the most core and highly concerned parameter. Among them, the transmission distance of optical modules also varies. In different fields and links of optical communication network transmission, the requirements for the characteristics of optical modules are also different. ETU-LINK will take you to learn about long-distance optical modules today.

Transmission distance and application of long-distance modules

As one of the important factors in optical modules, transmission distance is also divided into short distance optical modules, medium distance optical modules, and long distance optical modules. Short distance optical modules support link lengths of 2km and below, medium distance optical modules support link lengths of 10-20km, and long distance optical modules support link lengths of 40km and above. The transmitting power, receiving sensitivity and the optical attenuation coefficient are three factors affecting the optical transmission distance.

Long distance optical modules are mainly used in fields such as metropolitan area networks, optical synchronous digital transmission networks, Ethernet, fiber optic channels, synchronous digital architectures, synchronous fiber optic networks, telecommunications, etc.

What are the types of long-distance optical modules?

Among the types of optical modules SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, and QSFP28, there are long-distance optical modules. The common specifications of long-distance optical modules include 40km, 80km, 120km, etc.

Attention for using long-distance optical modules

Due to the strict requirements for the receiving power range of long-distance optical modules, exceeding the receiving sensitivity can easily lead to damage to the optical module. To reduce the failure of long-distance optical modules caused by improper use, the following precautions should be taken during use:

1Before connecting, test the optical power of the receiving end. If the optical power is too strong, consider using an appropriate attenuator to increase additional attenuation to meet the connection requirements.

2When transmitting a single mode optical module with a transmission distance exceeding 10km, the optical power at the receiving end cannot exceed the saturated optical power value.

3Long distance optical modules can be used in 10km link applications without attenuation. Generally, modules above 40km require attenuation and cannot be directly connected, otherwise the transmission and reception components may be damaged.

The long-distance optical module solves the problem of long-distance transmission requirements and provides great convenience to users. It is currently widely used. The long-distance optical module provided by ETU-LINK has excellent stability and cost-effectiveness. Welcome to choose!
