Tomb-Sweeping Day: A Tradition That Blends Remembrance with the Welcome of Spring
Tomb-Sweeping Festival, one of the twenty-four solar terms, is also a traditional Chinese festival for remembering ancestors and expressing grief, combining solemn sacrificial culture with the vibrant life of spring.
The most core custom of Tomb-Sweeping Festival is tomb sweeping and ancestor worship. People repair graves, clear weeds, place offerings, and burn incense to pay their respects, remembering their ancestors with sincere hearts and passing on filial piety and family affection. At the same time, there is a custom of inserting and wearing willow branches during Tomb-Sweeping. Willow branches symbolize vitality and peace, which is both a remembrance of the deceased and a hidden wish for blessings.
As an important festival in spring, Tomb-Sweeping has been associated with customs such as spring outings, kite flying, and swinging since ancient times. In addition to tomb sweeping, people go into nature to appreciate the spring scenery and enjoy the spring breeze, feeling the power of life in the revival of all things, making the festival both warm in remembrance and joyful in welcoming spring.
In terms of food, Tomb-Sweeping continues the tradition of Hanshi Festival, with special cold foods such as qingtuan, sanzi, and runbingcai, which are not only seasonal delicacies but also carry the ancient festival culture.
