Analysis of 56G QSFP+ DAC Passive Cable

  • November 02. 2023

High speed cable DAC is a fixed component that supports high-speed data transmission, using a small connector module as an optical transceiver on one end of the cable. With cost advantages and energy-saving advantages, it is widely used in data centers for short distance applications. High speed cable DACs come in different packaging and speeds: 10G SFP+ DAC, 25G SFP28 DAC, 40G/56G QSFP+ DAC, 100G QSFP28 DAC, 200G QSFP56 DAC, etc. In this article, ETU-LINK will introduce the 56G QSFP+ DAC passive high-speed cable.

Before officially introducing the 56G QSFP+ AOC active optical cable, let's take a look at the QSFP+ DAC high-speed optical cable. QSFP+ DAC high-speed cables can be divided into two types: active and passive. Passive QSFP+ DAC high-speed cables do not have a driver chip, so they can transmit signals without the need for electrical energy drive, and do not amplify or balance the signal during transmission. Generally speaking, the maximum transmission distance of passive QSFP+ DAC high-speed cables is 7 meters, while active QSFP+ DAC high-speed cables have driver chips that can perform signal conditioning, so their transmission distance is slightly longer, about 10 meters or even longer. They are mainly divided into four categories: 40G QSFP+ DAC active high-speed cables, 40G QSFP+ DAC passive high-speed cables, 40G QSFP+ to 4x10G SFP+ DAC passive high-speed cables, and 56G QSFP+ DAC passive high-speed cables.

The 56G QSFP+ DAC passive high-speed cable is a high-speed dual axis cable with QSFP+ connectors at both ends. It mainly uses silver plated conductors, insulated core wires made of physically foamed polyolefin materials, and wire pair shielding or total shielding. The conventional length of copper cable is 1-7 meters, and the copper cable gauge (referring to the diameter of copper cable) can be selected from 30 to 24 AWG. The larger the gauge, the higher the level of wire passing through the hole, and the smaller the diameter of the wire. Therefore, the longer the DAC high-speed cable, the smaller the gauge, which can effectively reduce signal transmission losses. Each channel can transmit data at a rate of up to 14.3125Gb/s, supporting a total aggregate rate of 56Gb/s, with a transmission distance of 7 meters, supporting commercial grade operating temperatures of 0-70 degrees Celsius, 3.3V operating voltage, and complying with SFF-8436 and RoHS specifications.

The 56G QSFP+ DAC passive high-speed cable is used for 56G InfiniBand SDR DDR/QDR and FDR interconnection, HPC interconnection, and has a cost-effective and low loss copper cable solution in 56G network application scenarios. The above is the entire content of this issue of ETU-LINK introducing 56G QSFP+ DAC passive high-speed cables. For more relevant information, please stay tuned!
