Optical Transceivers Introduction

Application of CWDM passive WDM technology and types of optical modules

  • July 04. 2020

With the advent of big data, cloud computing and 5G communication, with the increasing speed of data transmission, people continue to pursue higher definition pictures and videos as well as picture communication quality, which leads to the rapid growth of bandwidth demand in the data center, and the optical fiber resources with traditional optical fiber transmission media will be more and more tense. If the optical fiber is laid again, it will face a series of problems, such as tunnel excavation, overhead, buried pipeline, long construction period and large labor consumption, which will bring a lot of trouble to the urban construction. At this time, the choice of low-cost, high reliability technology to improve the utilization of optical fiber resources has become the primary problem to be solved.

In order to solve this problem, ETU-Link will introduce a low-cost, flexible CWDM Technology to solve the problem of insufficient fiber resources at this stage.

CWDM Technology does not need to add new optical fiber and replace the original equipment in the case of increasing business volume, by inserting a new OTU board for capacity expansion, the transmission capacity of the old optical fiber is increased, the utilization rate of the existing optical fiber resources is improved, and the data transmission task on a larger scale is realized.

In addition, because the working wavelength of CWDM is 1270 ~ 1610nm and the wavelength interval is 20nm, the wide wavelength can reduce the requirements of laser for technical specifications, thus reducing the design and development costs of optical modules. Under the dual advantages of low cost and large capacity expansion, CWDM is widely used in telecommunication, radio and television, enterprise network, campus network, data center, base station and other fields.

What is CWDM? In short, in the transmitter, the optical multiplexer is used to combine different wavelengths of light into a single optical fiber for transmission; at the receiving end of the link, the combined light is decomposed by a demultiplexer and sent to different receivers through different optical fibers, so only two optical fibers are needed to transmit multiple signals.

With the advent of 5G era, the optical module based on CWDM Technology has the advantages of large capacity, saving fiber resources, low loss, small size, flexible networking, etc., to meet the huge data transmission requirements in 5G era. Finally, the rapid development of 5G network construction will bring huge market opportunities and development opportunities to the optical module market.

The main types of CWDM optical modules of ETU-Link are as follows:

1. 1.25G&2.5G SFP CWDM 20KM~120KM

2. 10G SFP+ CWDM 10KM~80KM

3. 10G XFP CWDM 10KM~80KM

With the rapid development of the communication industry, ETU-Link follows the pace of the industry, actively responds to the industry's research and development of various CWDM optical module solutions, so as to cope with the optical module with higher speed demand in the future.

The above CWDM optical module is mainly used in wavelength division equipment. For more details of optical module, please visit our official website: www.etulinktechnology.com.
