Application of PoE optical fiber transceiver in remote video monitoring system

  • August 26. 2021

Nowadays, video surveillance systems have become one of the indispensable infrastructures in cities, communities, factories, parks, campuses and other scenes. With the rapid popularization of 4K/8K high-definition cameras, AI smart cameras and panoramic monitoring equipment, the transmission bandwidth, signal stability and transmission distance of video surveillance networks have put forward higher requirements. Traditional copper cable transmission can no longer meet the needs of long-distance and high-bandwidth monitoring. In this case, PoE optical fiber transceiver (PoE media converter) has become the core equipment for building stable and reliable remote video monitoring systems.

ETU-LINK will introduce to you today the use of PoE media converter and related equipment to build a remote fiber optic monitoring system.

I. What Is a PoE Media Converter?

Before introducing the video surveillance system, we must first understand the PoE media converter. It is mainly used in two types of networks: Gigabit Ethernet and 100M Ethernet, which can support two power supply modes: PoE (15.4 Watts) and PoE+ (25.5 Watts).

Common PoE media converter on the market are usually configured with 1 RJ45 interface and 1 SFP interface, and other PoE media converter will be equipped with duplex RJ45 interfaces and duplex optical interfaces, supporting the use of fixed optical connectors or SFP optical modules.

PoE media converter integrates optical-electrical conversion, network data transmission and PoE power supply in one device. It can convert electrical signals into optical signals for long-distance transmission via optical fiber, and supply power to front-end monitoring equipment at the same time, which perfectly solves the pain points of difficult power supply and short transmission distance in remote monitoring.

PoE media converter meet the needs of long-distance, high-speed, high-bandwidth Gigabit Ethernet and 100M Ethernet working group users, and can be widely used in various data communication fields such as security monitoring, conference systems, and intelligent building projects.

II. What Equipment Is Needed to Build a Remote Video Monitoring System?

Next, ETU-LINK will introduce the network video surveillance system construction solution. First, we need to prepare cameras, POE network cables, PoE media converter, SFP optical modules, optical fiber jumpers, switches, Cat5e network cables, Monitor hard disk video recorder, VGA data cable, video monitor. The specific connection method is shown in the following diagram of the monitoring system.

This set of equipment supports 100M/1000M self-adaptive, can meet the access of HD / 4K cameras, and the optical fiber transmission distance can be extended to 20km, 40km, 80km and even longer according to different optical modules, completely breaking the distance limit of network cables.

III. What Are the Functions of Each Device in the Monitoring System?

In order to remove everyones blind spot on the equipment, the following is a simple introduction to the use of related equipment.

1. The NVR hard disk video recorder mainly plays the role of video storage;

2. The switch plays the role of connecting multiple terminal devices and realizing network intercommunication;

3. The function of the optical module is to convert the photoelectric signal, and the optical fiber patch cord is to transmit the optical signal.

4. The PoE optical fiber transceiver has the function of power over Ethernet (PoE), which acts as a transmission relay. The optical port can be connected to a remote switch with an optical module and an optical fiber patch cord, and the network port can be connected to the camera through a network cable, which can be used for both data transmission and power supply, saving the trouble of installing a power cord separately;

5. The main function of surveillance cameras is video recording.

Among them, PoE optical fiber transceiver is the core hub of the whole system. It not only realizes long-distance optical fiber transmission, but also provides stable power supply for the camera, eliminating the need for additional power adapters, power boxes and wiring, greatly reducing construction difficulty and engineering cost.

IV. What Are the Advantages of PoE Optical Fiber Transceiver in Remote Monitoring?

The use of media converter in the network video surveillance system can extend the signal transmission distance while ensuring high-quality images, which will save more manpower, time and costs for network upgrades.

Compared with traditional network cable transmission and independent power supply mode, PoE optical fiber transceiver has obvious advantages in remote video monitoring:
(1). Longer transmission distance: Optical fiber transmission supports up to 80km+, far exceeding the 100-meter limit of network cables
(2). Integrated PoE power supply: Power supply + data transmission over one network cable, no need for separate power wiring
(3). Anti-interference & stable: Optical fiber transmission is not affected by electromagnetic interference, ensuring clear HD video
(4). Cost-saving: Reduce power supply equipment, cable and construction labor costs
(5). Easy installation & maintenance: Plug-and-play, suitable for outdoor, unattended monitoring scenes

V. FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About PoE Media Converter in Monitoring

1. Can PoE media converter be used outdoors?
Yes. Industrial-grade PoE media converter supports wide temperature operation (-40℃~85℃), lightning protection and anti-surge, suitable for outdoor monitoring scenes such as streets, bridges, tunnels and bases.
2. What is the maximum transmission distance of PoE fiber transceiver?
Depends on the optical module. Single-mode optical modules can support 10km, 20km, 40km, 80km and other distances, fully meeting the needs of remote monitoring in suburbs, parks, highways and other scenes.
3. Is it difficult to install and deploy PoE media converter?
No. It is plug-and-play, no configuration required. Just connect optical fiber, network cable and camera, and it can work normally. It is friendly to on-site construction personnel.
