The difference between fibre channel optical module and Ethernet optical module

  • May 28. 2021

In data center storage and networking, many users ask: What is a Fibre Channel (FC) optical module? What is an Ethernet optical module? Can they be used interchangeably? What are their key differences in protocol, speed, reliability, and application? Today, we will learn about optical fiber channel module, Ethernet optical module, and what is the difference between them?

I. What Is Fibre Channel (FC) Optical Module?

First of all, let's understand what fibre channel optical module is. It follows the fibre channel standard and is mainly used in the data center fibre channel storage network link. Its transmission rate can support 1-128Gbps at present. Common packages include SFP, SFP+, SFP28, SFP56 and QSFP28.

FC optical modules are purpose-built for Storage Area Networks (SANs). They feature lossless transmission, ultra-low latency, and high reliability, designed for connecting servers to storage arrays.

II. What Is Ethernet Optical Module?

Next, let's learn what Ethernet optical module is. It follows IEEE 802.3 standard and is mainly used in data center, campus network, etc. its transmission rate can support 155M-400Gbps at present. It is commonly packaged with SFP, SFP+,SFP28, SFP56, QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP-DD, etc. the types of Ethernet optical module include dual fiber optical module, bidi optical module, wavelength division optical modules, etc.

Ethernet optical modules are general-purpose network transceivers for LAN, WAN, cloud computing, and IP-based transmission. They support high scalability and flexible networking.

III. What Are the 5 Key Differences Between FC and Ethernet Modules?

1. Different Protocols & Compatibility

Fibre channel (FC) optical module and Ethernet optical module follow different protocols. FC optical module is compatible with Ethernet protocol, but Ethernet optical module does not support fibre channel protocol.

2. Different Reliability & Performance

The reliability of fibre channel (FC) optical module is better. The FC module is designed for users who pursue high speed and low latency for block storage. If the user needs to access the file level storage, priority should be given to the Ethernet module.

3. Different Supported Rates

They support different transmission rates. ETU-LINK's fiber channel (FC) module supports 1G/2G/8G/16G/32G/56G/128G, Ethernet optical module supports 10 / 100 / 1000Mbps, 10Gb/25G/50G/40G/100G/400G.

4. Different Application Fields

The application fields of the two are different. Fibre Channel (FC) optical modules are used in FC optical switches, and Ethernet optical modules are used in Ethernet switches.

5. Different Internal Components & Coding

Traditional fibre channel network, including FC switch and Fibre Channel cards (FC HBAs), is one of the main choices of San. FC switches connect the storage to the San, while optical network cards connect the switches to the servers. Ethernet switch has diversity, reflected in stackability, port number, transmission rate and so on.

FC vs Ethernet Optical Module Full Comparison Table

Item Fibre Channel (FC) Optical Module Ethernet Optical Module
Standard Fibre Channel (FC-PI) IEEE 802.3
Main Purpose Storage Area Network (SAN) General Ethernet Network
Reliability Ultra-high, lossless, low latency High, best-effort transmission
Supported Rates 1G/2G/8G/16G/32G/56G/128G 155M~400G
Compatibility Can work in some Ethernet ports Cannot work in FC ports
Typical Package SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP28 SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP-DD

Fibre Channel (FC) and Ethernet optical modules differ greatly in protocol, reliability, rate, application, and compatibility. FC modules focus on high-reliability storage transmission, while Ethernet modules focus on general network interconnection. Choosing the right module ensures stable performance and reduces compatibility risks.
ETU-LINK provides full-series FC and Ethernet optical modules: SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP28, etc., suitable for data center SAN and Ethernet network construction.
