What are the DDM, DOM, and RGD function of the optical module?
This article fully explains three core optical module technical labels DDM, DOM, RGD, including SFF-8472 industry standard, real-time monitoring parameters, rugged industrial-grade design, switch CLI query commands and matching ETU-LINK DDM optical module product lineup for network engineers and procurement personnel.
If you are the first time to buy optical transceivers, you might be confused with "DDM", "DOM" or "RGD". What are they? Today, ETU-Link will describe in detail the functions of these three types of optical modules.
1. What Is DDM Function of Optical Module?
DDM means Digital Diagnostic Monitoring. It is the technique used in the optical module so that users can monitor the real-time parameters of the module. Including modules’ working temperature, working voltage, working current, TX and RX Power etc, can also show the factory information of the optical transceiver, prompt warning/alarm.
DDM is defined under the SFF-8472 international MSA standard, which unifies the I2C EEPROM storage protocol inside SFP/SFP+/SFP28 modules. The module stores two groups of data via 0xA0 and 0xA2 memory addresses: static factory information (PN, SN, wavelength, distance) and dynamic real-time diagnostic data. When optical power exceeds high/low threshold or temperature triggers overheat, the switch will pop up alarm logs to quickly locate fiber attenuation, module aging and port failure. All mainstream brand switches support reading DDM data through dedicated CLI commands.
RGD means rugged optical modules, so the optical module with RGD function is an enhanced module. This optical module is more durable and can be used in very harsh conditions. The rugged optical module has enhanced ESD protection and a greater range of operating temperatures. Thus, field failures can be eliminated, not need expensive external protection devices.
RGD = Rugged, stands for industrial ruggedized optical transceiver, core optimized upgrades compared to ordinary commercial modules:
1) Temperature range expansion: Commercial COM 0~70℃ vs RGD industrial grade -40℃ ~ +85℃;
2) Enhanced ESD & surge protection PCB circuit, resist lightning induction and electromagnetic interference in outdoor cabinets;
3) Reinforced mechanical structure, anti-vibration, suitable for vehicle-mounted, rail transit, outdoor base station, industrial control equipment;
4) Full compatibility with original Cisco RGD series such as GLC-SX-MM-RGD, GLC-LH-SM-RGD.
Typical RGD module application scenarios: 5G outdoor fronthaul base stations, intelligent traffic monitoring, factory industrial Ethernet, wind power and photovoltaic power station communication equipment, cold storage low-temperature computer rooms.
4. Core Difference Comparison: DDM/DOM vs RGD Module
1). DDM/DOM: Belongs to digital monitoring function, all commercial/industrial modules can be equipped, used for real-time parameter reading and fault alarm;
2). RGD: Belongs to hardware ruggedized industrial grade design, focuses on wide temperature and anti-interference performance, can carry DDM/DOM monitoring at the same time;
3). Matching logic: Indoor air-conditioned data center can choose ordinary DDM commercial module; outdoor/industrial harsh environment must select RGD rugged optical module with built-in DDM monitoring.
