100G Optical Modules: Analysis of QSFP28 Packaging Technology

  • October 24. 2025

In 100G optical communication networks, QSFP28 (Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable 28) is the mainstream packaging standard. It is key to high-speed interconnection in data centers and telecommunications networks, and directly affects the deployment efficiency of optical modules and network performance.

I. Core Design of QSFP28 Packaging

1. Compact size: approximately 18.3mm×56.5mm×8.5mm, only 1/5 of the traditional 100G CFP package. A 1U rack can accommodate 48+ ports, significantly improving device port density.

2. Quad-channel architecture: Built-in 4 independent channels, with a single channel rate of mostly 25Gbps, achieving a total bandwidth of 100G through "4×25Gbps" aggregation, balancing technical difficulty and transmission efficiency.

3. Interface and power supply: The 28-pin high-speed connector integrates the I2C management interface to monitor module status; typical power consumption is ≤3.5W (low-power model 2.5W), meeting low-carbon requirements.

ETU-Link 100G QSFP28 optical module strictly follows the above design. For example, the 100G QSFP28 SR4 optical module integrates a four-channel architecture, with a stable single-channel 25Gbps rate. It can achieve 100 meters of 100Gbps transmission through OM4 multimode optical fiber, accurately monitor the module status, and control power consumption.

II. Core Advantages of QSFP28

(1). High density reduces costs: The small size doubles the switch port density, reducing the number of switches deployed, reducing equipment room space and procurement costs.

(2). Low power consumption and energy saving: 3.5W power consumption reduces energy consumption by 65% compared to CFP package (10W+), and large-scale deployment has significant long-term energy saving effects.

(3). Easy operation and maintenance: hot-swappable, ETU-Link is compatible with modules from different manufacturers, eliminating the need to adjust device configurations and simplifying operation and maintenance.

As a professional module manufacturer, ETU-Link can provide 1G-800G optical modules. The following are some of ETU-Link 100G optical Transceiver:

III. Technology Evolution

1. Backward compatibility: Some modules can be adjusted to 50G/25G speeds to meet different bandwidth requirements and avoid duplicate investment.

2. Upward expansion: The QSFP56 package based on its technology (supporting 200G/400G) is compatible with the original port size, and network upgrades can be smoothly transitioned by simply replacing the module.

QSFP28 package with its compactness, low power consumption and high compatibility, has become the key to the implementation of 100G optical communication networks. Products from companies such as ETU-Link have further promoted its application and boosted the development of the optical communication industry.
