What is the difference between simplex and duplex fiber patch cord?

  • September 07. 2022

When we start to learn fiber patch cord, may be many partners do not know what simplex and duplex exactly stand for? This blog ETU-LINK will analyze what is simplex, duplex. In fact, the optical fiber patch cord simplex and duplex refer to the working mode of the interface. Simplex and duplex are the two modes of communication channel in the telecommunication computer network.

Simplex refers to the transmission of information in one direction, at the two ends of the communication, one is the transmitter, the other is the receiver, is not reversible. The duplex can carry out bidirectional information transmission on the signal carrier and receive data at the same time. The sender and receiver are required to have independent receiving and sending capabilities at the same time.

To put it more simply, a simplex jumper has only one port at each end, while a duplex patch cord has two ports at each end. A duplex patch cord is usually used in a variety of duplex communication applications, such as workstations, Fibre Channel switches and servers, and fibre optic modems.

The concept of a communication channel is very important to understand the operation of a network. Simplex and duplex are two modes of communication channel. Each of these can be deployed for different applications, and choosing fiber jumpers based on their channel patterns is a more cost-effective approach.
