What is the difference between single fiber and dual fiber optical module?

In this issue, ETU-LINK will introduce what is a single fiber optical module and a dual fiber optical module, and what are the differences between them.

So what are single fiber optical modules and dual fiber optical modules? Single fiber optical module is an optical module product with only one optical fiber port. It can transmit and receive optical signals at the same time by inserting only one optical fiber. The dual fiber optical module has two ports, TX is the transmitting port and RX is the receiving port. Two different optical fibers are required for transmission and reception.

So how do we distinguish?
1.Appearance: The fiber optic module has an optical fiber interface to connect one optical fiber; The dual fiber optical module has two optical fiber interfaces to connect two optical fibers;
2.Wavelength: Single fiber module has two different wavelengths, though dual fiber module has only one wavelength.

The wavelengths of single fiber mainly include the following:
Giga single fiber:
TX1310/RX1550nm; 
TX1550/RX1310nm; 
TX1490/RX1550nm; 
TX1550/RX1490nm; 
TX1310nm/Rx1490nm; 
TX1490nm/Rx1310nm;

10 Gigabit single fiber:
TX1270nm/RX1330nm 
TX1330nm/RX1270nm 
TX1490nm/RX1550nm 
TX1550nm/RX1490nm 

Conventional wavelength of dual fiber: 850nm 1310nm 1550nm

3.Data rate: Compared with the dual fiber optical module, the single fiber optical module has a wide range of applications in 100 megabit, gigabit and 10 gigabit speeds; It is rare in 40G and 100G high-speed transmission; However, the dual fiber module is a common choice.

For example, 10G SFP+ single fiber and dual fiber optical module.

Dual fiber: The devices at both ends can use 10G SFP+ dual fiber optical modules with a wavelength of 1310nm.
Single fiber: 1270/1330nm module is used at one end of the device, and 1330/1270nm module is used at the other end of the device.
