What should be paid attention to in the use of optical module

With the rapid development of communication industry, optical modules are widely used in various optical interconnection scenarios. When we use the optical module, we need to ensure the efficient and stable operation of the optical module. But sometimes it will cause some problems due to the use of non-standard, so what do we need to do to avoid the problems caused by the non-standard use? The following ETU-LINK will explain the eight points for attention in the use of optical module.

 

Take the optical module with care

There are ceramic parts inside the optical module, so be careful when taking the optical module. If it is dropped or bumped by force, the optical module is not recommended to be used to avoid subsequent failure.

 

Pay attention to the operation specification of plugging optical module

1. When installing the optical module, it is necessary to insert the module to the bottom to make the optical module lock in place. When the optical module card lock is not in place, the gold finger contacts with the connector on the single board, and the link may be connected. However, in case of vibration and collision, the link will be interrupted, and the optical module may be disconnected and loose;

 

2. When inserting, make sure that the pull ring is closed (the snap lock plays a positioning role at this time);

3. After inserting, pull out the optical module again to check whether it is installed in place. If it cannot be pulled out, it means that it is inserted properly;

4. When taking out the optical module, do not touch the golden finger part of the optical module to avoid damage to the optical module;

 

5. When inserting the optical module, make sure that the pull ring of the optical module is attached to the optical port of the optical module, and then insert it. If the optical module is just taken out, do not pull out the dust plug and insert it directly;

6. When pulling out the optical module, first pull out the optical fiber jumper, pull the pull ring to the position about 90 degrees to the optical port, and then slowly pull out. When pulling out, do not use too much force or pull out if the pull ring is not in place, which may damage the shielding cover of optical module.

 

Matters needing attention when inserting patch cord

1. When inserting the optical fiber patch cord into the optical module, it is required to move gently and insert it facing the optical port. If the optical module is inserted too hard or obliquely, the optical module may be damaged. 

 

2. When inserting the optical fiber jumper, it is necessary to note that the a end should be connected to the B end, and the B end should be connected to the a end.

 

Pollution prevention measures of optical module optical port

1. When using, it must be equipped with wiping paper, and the jumper must be cleaned before inserting into the optical port, so as to avoid cross contamination of the optical port caused by the pollution of the optical patch cord end face.

 

2. If the optical module is not in use, the dust cap must be covered to avoid dust pollution. If there is no dust cap or the dust cap is lost, optical fiber can be used instead, and the optical fiber is inserted into the optical port. And put the optical module in the appropriate position.

 

3. The optical port of the optical module should not be exposed for a long time, otherwise the LD end face will be polluted, which may lead to the failure of the optical module. If it is not used for a long time, it is necessary to wear a dust cap for protection.

4. Pay attention to the cleaning of the optical port of the optical module with cotton swab, and the cleaning of the optical fiber port with fiber wiping paper.

5. If abnormal signal loss is found during the operation of the equipment, clean the optical module first to eliminate the pollution factors.

 

Multimode optical module can not transmit on single mode fiber

If the multimode optical module is transmitted on the single-mode fiber, the transmission distance will be affected due to the excessive attenuation of the multimode fiber.

 

Long distance single mode optical module can be transmitted on multimode fiber

10KM single-mode optical module can transmit on multimode fiber, and the transmission distance is the same as that of corresponding multimode optical module. The main factor affecting the transmission distance is dispersion rather than attenuation.

 

The power range of long distance optical module docking receiving light is strict

1. Test the received short optical power before connection. If the optical power is too strong, appropriate attenuator can be used to increase additional attenuation to meet the connection requirements.

2. When a single-mode optical module with a transmission distance of more than 10km is transmitting, the optical power of the receiving end should not exceed the saturation optical power value, otherwise the receiving device may be damaged.

 

Anti-burnout measures for optical modules

1. Optical modules are generally burned out when high-power optical signals are input, such as OTDR meters, fiber self-loops, etc., which exceed their own load and cause burnout. Generally, optical attenuators need to be connected to avoid this error. Pay attention to adding an appropriate optical attenuator during the self-loop test of the single board. The optical attenuator cannot be replaced by the loose optical module.

2. When using OTDR table to test the optical fiber link, the optical fiber must be disconnected from the optical module, otherwise it is easy to burn the optical module.
