Introduction and application of 40G QSFP+ PSM4 optical module

With the increasing demand of network throughput and bandwidth, the demand of 40G high-speed optical module also increases. At present, the common 40G optical modules on the market include 40G QSFP+ SR4, 40G QSFP+ LR4 and 40G QSFP+ ER4. Since the transmission distance of the above optical modules cannot fully cover the transmission distance requirements of the data center, the 40GBASE-SR4 optical module can not meet all interconnection scenarios because the transmission distance supported by the 40GBASE-SR4 optical module is too short, and the cost of using 40GBASE-LR4 optical module is too high, so MSA has formulated 40G PSM4 standard solves the requirement of medium distance transmission. Next, ETU-LINK will introduce the 40G QSFP+ PSM4 optical module.

 

40G QSFP+ PSM4 optical module introduction

The 40G QSFP+ PSM4 optical module is packaged with QSFP+ and the wavelength is 1310nm. It is equipped with 4-channel FP laser array, PIN photodetector array and MPO 12 core optical port. The maximum transmission distance can reach 2/10KM by matching with OS2 single-mode patch cord.

 

 

Working principle

When 40G QSFP+ PSM4 transmits signals at the transmitting end, the electrical signals are first converted into optical signals by laser array. When transmitting signals at the transmitting end and receiving signals at the receiving end, the photodetector array converts the parallel optical signals into parallel electrical signals.

With the maturity of 40G optical module and its related series products, functional design is no longer the main selling point of the industry, but cost performance is replaced by the optimization of cost and performance reliability. Among the 40G and 100G products, high density and small size have become the common goal of the industry, so array chip has become the only choice for high-speed products. For PD and VCSEL, it is relatively easy to process into arrays, while for DFB and FP lasers with long-distance transmission, due to the limitation of materials and technology, it is very difficult to fabricate arrays. It is very difficult to see DFB array chips or FP array chips in the industry. However, the demand of FA in 40G and 100G optical devices is growing, so the advantages and trends of 40G PSM4 as long-distance series products are self-evident.
