What's the difference between optical module and media converter?

Optical modules and media converters are both key photoelectric conversion devices widely used in fiber optic communication, data centers, enterprise networks, and broadband access systems. Many users are confused about their roles, differences, and connection rules. This article will clarify everything in detail.


1. What Is an Optical module ?

The function of optical module is also the conversion between photoelectric signals. It is mainly used as the carrier of transmission between switch and equipment. The principle of optical module is the same as that of media converter, but optical module is more efficient and safe than media converter. ccording to the packaging form, the common optical modules are SFP, SFP+, XFP, SFP28, QSFP+, QSFP28 etc.

Optical modules are pluggable fiber optic transceiver modules designed for switches, routers, servers, and other network equipment with SFP/SFP+ slots.


2. What Is a Media converter (Fiber Converter)?

Media converter is a device that converts short-distance electrical signals and long-distance optical signals. It is generally used in long-distance transmission. It transmits through optical fiber, converts electrical signals into optical signals and sends them out. At the same time, it converts the received optical signals into electrical signals at the receiving end. It is also called fiber converter in many places.

Media converters provide a low-cost way to extend Ethernet distance from copper cable to fiber for LAN and MAN access layers.

Optical fiber transceiver provides a cheap solution for users who need to upgrade their system from copper wire to optical fiber, but lack of money, manpower or time.



3. What Are the Main Differences Between Optical Module and Media Converter?

Active and passive: Optical module is a functional module, or accessories, which is a active device that can not be used alone, and can only be used in switches and devices with SFP slots; optical fiber transceiver is a functional device, which is a separate active device, and can be used alone by plugging in the power supply. Optical modules are pluggable components; media converters are standalone devices.

Upgrade configuration: The optical module supports hot swap, and the configuration is relatively flexible; the media converter is relatively fixed, so it will be troublesome to replace and upgrade;

Price: Media converter is cheaper than optical module, relatively economical and applicable, but power adapter, light state, network cable state and other factors should be considered, transmission loss accounts for about 30%;

Application: Optical module is mainly used for optical network communication equipment, such as optical interface of convergence switch, core router, DSLAM, OLT and other equipment, such as computer video, data communication, wireless voice communication and other optical network backbone network; Media converter is used in the actual network environment where Ethernet cable cannot be covered and optical fiber must be used to extend the transmission distance, and it is usually the access layer application of broadband man;

Optical modules serve core/backbone networks; media converters focus on access layer / LAN extension.



4. What should be paid attention to when connecting optical module and media converter?

① The speed of the optical module and media converter must be the same, 100 megabytes connects 100 megabytes, gigabytes connects gigabytes, and 10gigabytes connects 10gigabytes.

The wavelength and transmission distance must be consistent. For example, the wavelength is 1310nm at the same time, the transmission distance is 10km;

The type of fiber must be the same, single fiber to single fiber, dual fiber to dual fiber.

Optical patch cord or pigtail must be the same connector to be able to connect. Generally, SC connector is used for media converter and LC connector is used for optical module.
